WordPress Plugins

Admin and Site Enhancements Pro 8.8.0

Managing a WordPress website — whether it’s a personal blog, a client site, or a multi-site agency network — almost always results in the same problem: plugin bloat. You install one plugin to change the login URL, another to clean up the admin menu, another to enable SVG uploads, another for content duplication, another for custom code snippets, and suddenly you’re maintaining 20–30 single-purpose plugins that each add database queries, admin menu entries, and potential compatibility conflicts.

Admin and Site Enhancements (ASE) was built to solve exactly that problem. It’s a modular, lightweight WordPress plugin that consolidates 70+ commonly needed features into one clean, organized interface — replacing a significant portion of your plugin stack with a single, well-maintained tool.

ASE Pro 8.8.0 is the latest release, and it adds a brand-new Disable User Account module alongside important Site Backup and Migration improvements, PHP 8.5 compatibility fixes, and continued refinements across the plugin’s extensive feature set. In this guide, we cover everything: what’s new, the complete feature catalogue, pricing, and where to download it.

What Is Admin and Site Enhancements (ASE)?

A modular and lightweight WordPress plugin to easily enhance various admin workflows and site aspects that replaces multiple plugins and saves you time, effort and money.

ASE was first released on October 17, 2022. Since then, there have been 86 major releases and 191 minor releases, for a total of 277 releases — a pace of roughly two to three releases per week, every week, for nearly four years. Each major release typically corresponds with the addition of one new module or feature, the equivalent of one or more single-purpose plugins. Each minor release typically contains bug fixes or improvements to existing modules.

The numbers tell the story of its adoption: over 200,000 websites use ASE, with 9 million+ update downloads and 400+ five-star reviews on WordPress.org. It is available in 30+ languages across 38 active translation locales.

ASE currently offers 76 modules in total — 58 free modules, 31 with Pro features added on top, and 18 Pro-exclusive modules.

What’s New in ASE Pro 8.8.0?

Version 8.8.0 was released on May 18, 2026 — the same day as this writing.

New Module: Disable User Account (Free and Pro)

The headline addition in 8.8.0 is a brand-new Disable User Account module under the Log In/Out & Register section. It allows administrators to disable login for individual users while preserving their content and display name. This is an important capability for agencies, membership sites, and any multi-user WordPress installation where an account needs to be deactivated — but the associated content and authorship needs to stay intact.

Site Backup and Migration: S3-Compatible Storage Support (Pro)

The Site Backup and Migration module — itself a landmark new addition introduced in v8.7.0 — gained S3-compatible storage location support in 8.8.0. This means you can now send your backups to any S3-compatible storage provider, not just Amazon S3 — including Wasabi, DigitalOcean Spaces, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, MinIO, and any other S3-compatible service. For agencies and developers who prefer specific storage providers for cost or compliance reasons, this is a significant expansion of the backup system’s flexibility.

The 8.7.x Series: A Landmark Run of Updates

To appreciate just how actively ASE is developed, here’s what the 8.7.x series delivered in the weeks before 8.8.0:

v8.7.3 (May 11, 2026)

Fixed a PHP 8.5 compatibility deprecation that appeared when ASE is installed in certain server environments. Added a detection mechanism in the Two-Factor Authentication module to identify invalid stored TOTP keys that were causing fatal errors — login in such a scenario now shows a helpful error message rather than a crash. Enhanced the Open All External Links in New Tab module with options to exclude specific domains from opening in a new tab and to exclude domains from receiving the rel="nofollow" attribute. Fixed a Cloudflare Turnstile validation issue in the Form Builder on multi-submission attempts.

v8.7.2 (May 4, 2026)

Added an option to disable admin email notification after password change. Made multiple reliability improvements to the Site Backup and Migration module, including better high-compatibility mode for both manual and scheduled backups, improved handling of non-standard ‘cache’ folder names in archives, and smarter handling of post ID collisions in post type scoped sync operations.

v8.7.1 (April 27, 2026)

Added the ability to disable user email notification after password change. Major Site Backup and Migration upgrades including: “Upload a Backup Archive” and “Transfer a Backup Archive from URL” actions in the emergency restore script; domain-mismatch checks to prevent restoring a backup from a different site; scoped media sync that auto-selects “Only files used by selected posts” when syncing selected post types; scoped terms sync tied to selected post type posts; scoped custom field values sync for ASE-configured CPTs; and options to sync all or some CPT, taxonomy, and field group configurations created in ASE’s Custom Content Types module.

v8.7.0 (April 20, 2026) — Site Backup and Migration Launched

Version 8.7.0 was the biggest single release in recent ASE history, adding the full Site Backup and Migration module — backup site files and database, restore from backups, and migrate or sync to another server. Also fixed a regression in the Change Login URL module that was exposing the custom login URL to public visitors. Added options to File Manager for putting the folder tree on the left side and adding it as a top-level admin menu item.

v8.6.2 (April 13, 2026)

Fixed admin notices not being hidden in Admin Columns plugin’s admin pages. Added REST API exposure capability for custom field values created via ASE’s Custom Content Types module — a major developer-facing improvement that enables custom field data to be read and updated via the WP REST API. Improved cron bypass for the Password Protection module.

v8.6.1 (April 6, 2026)

Significantly upgraded the Admin Bar Custom Elements module: drag parent elements between left and right sides, drag child elements from one parent to another, set which user roles see each element. Improved Code Snippets Manager error handling with a dedicated Error Log page. Added public preview support for scheduled posts. Added email notification support for frontend submission forms via the Custom Content Types module.

v8.6.0 (March 30, 2026)

Launched the Admin Bar Custom Elements module — a new Pro module to add custom menu and submenu items to the WordPress admin bar. Applied a security fix for the Change Login URL module addressing a vulnerability that could expose the hidden login form in certain URL patterns.

The Complete ASE Feature Catalogue

ASE organizes its 76 modules into clearly defined categories. Here is the full breakdown:

Content Management

Custom Content Types (Pro) — Conveniently register and edit custom post types, custom taxonomies, custom field groups, and options pages. Compatible with Gutenberg/the block editor and integrates with Oxygen Builder, Bricks, Breakdance, and Elementor. The custom fields module supports REST API exposure (added in v8.6.2), enabling integration with headless setups.

Post Type Switcher (Pro) — Easily switch the post type of one or more posts to a different post type from the classic editor, block editor, quick edit, or bulk edit.

Content Duplication (Free + Pro features) — Enable one-click duplication of pages, posts, and public post types with all taxonomy terms and post meta. Pro adds duplication links in the post edit screen’s publishing section, role-based controls, and post type selection.

Content Order (Free + Pro features) — Enable custom ordering of hierarchical content types or those supporting page attributes. Pro extends this to non-hierarchical post types (including media/attachments), with featured image and taxonomy toggles on the ordering page.

Terms Order (Pro) — Enable custom ordering of terms from hierarchical taxonomies for both the admin and frontend display.

Media Files Visibility Control (Free + Pro features) — Limit media files visibility so non-administrator users only see their own uploads. Pro adds role-specific control.

Media Categories (Pro) — Add categories to the media library with drag-and-drop categorization. Use categories to filter media during content insertion.

Media Replacement (Free + Pro features) — Replace any media file while retaining the existing media ID, publish date, and file name — no broken links. Pro adds replacement from the grid view.

SVG Upload (Free) — Allow selected user roles to upload SVG files with sanitization for security.

AVIF Upload (Free) — Enable uploading AVIF next-generation image files to the Media Library.

Public Preview for Drafts (Pro) — Enable public preview links for draft posts across public post types. Useful for editorial collaboration with people who are not WordPress users. Also supports scheduled posts (added in v8.6.1).

External Permalinks (Free + Pro features) — Enable pages, posts, and custom post types to have permalinks pointing to external URLs.

Open All External Links in New Tab (Pro) — Automatically open all external links in a new browser tab with options to exclude specific domains (added in v8.7.3).

Hide Admin Notices (Free + Pro features) — Collect and hide admin notices in a fly-out panel to keep the admin area clean. Fixed to work correctly in Admin Columns plugin’s admin pages (v8.6.2).

Content Duplication Link — Already covered under Content Management.

Wider Admin Menu (Free) — Increase the admin menu width to prevent label truncation.

Log In / Log Out / Register

Site Identity on Login Page (Free) — Replace the default WordPress logo on the login page with your site icon and URL.

Redirect After Login/Logout (Free + Pro features) — Define where users are redirected after logging in or out, configurable per user role.

Last Login Column and Filter (Free) — Add a “Last Login” column to the Users list screen for quick visibility into user activity.

Disable User Account (Free and Pro) — NEW in 8.8.0 — Allow administrators to disable login for individual users while preserving their content and display name. Essential for membership sites, agencies, and multi-author publications.

Security

Email Address Obfuscator (Free + Pro features) — Obfuscate email addresses in post and page content to protect them from email harvesting spam bots. The “high-compatibility” mode is now available in the Free version (added in v8.6.0).

Two-Factor Authentication / 2FA (Pro) — Enable TOTP authenticator app-based and email-based 2FA for user accounts. Supports per-role 2FA configuration, grace periods, and email method auto-enabling per role (updated in v8.6.0). Invalid TOTP key detection added in v8.7.3.

Limit Login Attempts (Free + Pro features) — Limit the number of failed login attempts per IP before temporarily blocking further attempts.

Blocked User Agents (Free) — Block specified user agents from accessing your site — useful for blocking known bad bots and scrapers.

Disable Components

Disable Gutenberg (Free + Pro features) — Disable the block editor (Gutenberg) globally or on specific post types, reverting to the Classic Editor.

Disable Comments (Free + Pro features) — Completely disable comments across the entire site or on specific post types, including removing comment-related menu items.

Disable REST API (Free + Pro features) — Restrict access to the WP REST API for non-logged-in users. 2FA routes are automatically excluded (updated in v8.6.0).

Disable Smaller Components (Free + Pro features) — A collection of toggles to disable specific WordPress features: XML-RPC, RSS feeds, admin email verification prompt, fatal error handler emails, admin email notification after password change (v8.7.2), and user email notification after password change (v8.7.1).

Disable Emojis (Free) — Disable the emoji scripts that WordPress loads by default on every page.

Optimizations

Image Upload Control (Free + Pro features) — Control image upload settings including maximum dimensions, quality compression, and automatic conversion to WebP or AVIF formats.

Heartbeat Control (Free) — Manage the WordPress Heartbeat API’s pulse rate or disable it entirely on specific admin screens to reduce CPU usage.

Revisions Control (Free) — Limit the number of post revisions saved per post type to reduce database bloat.

Permanent Delete Actions (Free) — Add one-click permanent delete actions to the post list screen and quick edit so posts bypass the trash.

Utilities

Site Backup and Migration (Pro) — Backup site files and database, restore from backups, and migrate or sync your site to another server. The system supports scoped backups (selected post types, media, terms, and custom fields), S3-compatible storage (added in v8.8.0), emergency restore scripts, and high-compatibility mode. Sync operations are highly granular — sync selected CPT configurations, taxonomies, field groups, and custom field values tied to specific post types.

Password Protection (Free + Pro features) — Protect your entire site with a password before it’s ready to go live. Cron requests bypass the protection automatically (v8.6.2).

File Manager (Pro) — A full file manager within the WordPress admin. Options added to position the folder tree on the left and to add it as a top-level menu item (v8.7.0). “Last Modified” column reflects the timezone set in WordPress Settings (v8.6.0).

Email Delivery (Free + Pro features) — Configure WordPress to send emails via SMTP or API-based email services for reliable email delivery. Fixed PHP 8.4 deprecation (v8.6.1).

Form Builder (Pro) — A full form builder built into ASE, with fields including text, email, URL, textarea, number, select, checkbox, radio, file upload, date, hidden fields, matrix fields, and Cloudflare Turnstile CAPTCHA support. Email notifications with tag support for dynamic field values. Auto-responder emails. Fixed Cloudflare Turnstile validation on multi-submission attempts (v8.7.3).

Custom Code

Code Snippets Manager (Pro) — Create, manage, and run PHP, CSS, and JavaScript code snippets directly from the WordPress admin. Includes revision history, safe mode that auto-enables on fatal errors, a dedicated Error Log page for diagnosing snippet errors (v8.6.1), and role-based access control for the editor.

Custom Code in Various Locations (Free) — Add custom CSS, JavaScript, or HTML to the header, footer, or specific locations without editing theme files.

Why ASE Is Different From Using Individual Plugins

The testimonials from actual users tell the story better than any feature list can:

ASE covers so many key website functions, it helps take sites from 30+ plugins to single digits. With more than 32 separate plugin installations spared, ASE allows users to remove tons of plugins to reduce the possibility of plugin conflicts. Agencies have replaced 14 plugins with ASE alone, resulting in much faster backends. Developers describe it as the plugin that belongs in WordPress core itself — features so essential they shouldn’t require a separate plugin installation.

The key architectural advantage is ASE’s modular approach: you activate only the modules you need. Every inactive module adds zero overhead. This is fundamentally different from most all-in-one plugins that load all their code regardless of which features you’re using.

  • Solo — 1 site
  • Starter — 3 sites
  • Team — 10 sites
